Espresso tools for the Breville Barista Express & Impress (54mm)

If you own a Breville Barista Express, a Barista Express Impress, a Barista Pro or a Barista Touch — or the same machines badged Sage in the UK and Europe — your portafilter takes 54 mm tools. That is the size on this page. You do not need to measure anything.

The confusing part: other shops list these same tools as 53 or 53.3 mm, because the basket measures a shade under the portafilter and a tamper has to clear the wall. Same machine, same part. Pick 54mm and it fits.

The one thing to check first

Your machine came with two sets of baskets: single-wall and dual-wall (pressurised). If you are still on the dual-wall ones, switch before you buy anything here. A pressurised basket makes its crema at the outlet hole rather than in the coffee, so it hides both good and bad puck prep — and these tools will appear to do nothing.

Why the Barista Express specifically needs this

The built-in conical grinder is convenient and it clumps. Grounds come out of the burrs in sticky clusters, and a clump is a dense spot water flows around instead of through, so most of the bed barely gets extracted.

The Impress adds an assisted tamp, which solves pressure and levelness — but tamping a clumped bed flat does not un-clump it. The razor trim tool sets your dose, not your distribution. Both machines still need the coffee broken up before it gets pressed.

What it will not do

It will not fix stale beans, and it will not turn the built-in grinder into a single-dose burr set. It fixes what happens between grinding and tamping, which on this machine is where most of the inconsistency lives.

No size to choose

WDT tools, milk pitchers, shot glasses, brushes, the dosing spoon and the scale fit every machine. So does the Latte Art Set.

Buy a scale before any of this

The Barista Express has no scale in it and its volumetric dosing measures time, not weight. If you are not weighing your dose and your shot, none of the rest is measurable. Ours is €39.99, but any accurate 0.1 g scale does the job.
