If you own a De'Longhi La Specialista — Arte, Arte Evo, Maestro, Opera or Touch — your portafilter takes 51 mm tools. You do not need to measure anything.
Tamping and distributing are two different jobs. The lever presses the coffee flat with consistent pressure, and does it better than most people manage by hand. What it cannot do is reach into the bed and break up what the grinder delivered — press a clumped bed flat and you get a flat clumped bed.

Four steps, every morning
-
1Ring on. The magnetic dosing ring seats on the basket so nothing spills over the edge.
-
2Stir. WDT needles break up the clusters the conical burrs delivered.
-
3Let the lever tamp. That part your machine already does well — leave it to it.
-
4Screen on. The puck screen spreads the water evenly and keeps the shower head clean.
You may not need the tamper
On this machine the WDT tool and the dosing ring are the parts that matter most, and the tamper is the one you may genuinely not need. If that is your read, the WDT tool with magnetic stand and the magnetic dosing ring are sold separately.
On the scale. The La Specialista doses by weight on the way in, which is more than most machines do — but it does not weigh what lands in your cup. A scale under the cup is what tells you your ratio. Ours reads to 0.1 g.
